Campus West Car Park
Campus West is a key source of entertainment and recreation in the town centre.
It's a family friendly space with the Welwyn Garden City Cinema, Roller City, Soft Play City and Humphrey's Cafe and Bar. The library is also located here. Car parking is vital to the prosperity of the centre and the adjoining businesses and Oaklands College.
Catalyst to development
Campus West Car Park will serve as the catalyst to the wider WGC 2120 project, we will increase the capacity of the existing car parking area to allow the phased development of other opportunity sites. The target uplift is estimated as an increase of between 180 to 360 spaces. We have begun the design process to see how best we can consolidate parking in this location, while also creating a high quality and safe environment and respect the surrounding uses and heritage of the town.
Public engagement - February 2021 Update.
In November 2020, we introduced the proposals on Campus West to the public. In normal circumstances, we would have held the engagement sessions to discuss the proposals in person, however due to Coronavirus (Covid-19) regulations, we instead created a virtual exhibition. The Covid-19 pandemic has provided an opportunity to consider the existing and future car parking needs within the town as a whole, and specifically the need for short and long term parking in the north of the town. The pandemic has also raised the real possibility of changes to the way we work and therefore the number of spaces which would need to be allocated for the various uses. We will continue to review the long term impact of Covid-19 throughout the WGC 2120 project. Through the engagement, we received many comments about the proposals for two decks, expressing concern for a variety of reasons. After much consideration and review, we have reduced the proposals to a single deck. We were able to achieve this without causing further impact to the town centre by retaining some parking elsewhere as part of the redevelopment.
The engagement sessions have now closed. We have reviewed the feedback received and integrated some of the most common responses into the revised proposal, which have been detailed in our You Said, We did. See the document here:
