The scheme is open to local charity, voluntary, community and not-for-profit organisations where at least half of their members or service users live or work in the borough.

For a project to be considered by the Grants Board it must make a positive contribution to one or more of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council's priorities, which are:

· Maintain a safe and health community

· Protect and enhance the environment

· Meet the borough's housing needs

· Help build a strong local economy

· Engage with our communities and provide value for money

Councillor Duncan Bell, Executive Member for Resources said:

"The work of local voluntary and community organisations in the borough is vital to supporting and improving the lives of so many residents, particularly this year with the coronavirus pandemic.

"Many may be struggling to fund this work so we're delighted to be able support some of their projects and help them achieve their aims."

Recover and the Welwyn Hatfield Women's Refuge were among the local organisations which received annual community grants last year to help fund projects.

"The Annual Community Grant we received is a major contributing factor to our development, enabling Recover to begin formalising relationships with Partner Agencies throughout the Borough," said a spokesperson from Recover.

"We have been able to provide extra workshops for groups of participants and staff from JCP Hatfield, YMCA Peartree, Resolve, Beacon Victim Support and CGL. The excellent feedback and success of this new way of working means we are now extending the service and will also be incorporating it as part of our core offering.

"In addition to helping Recover's development, the grants also provide more opportunities for more vulnerable people in our communities to receive levels of help and support that otherwise would be not be available."

Welwyn Hatfield Women's Refuge put their Annual Community Grant towards their support services.

"The Community Grant that Welwyn Hatfield Women's Refuge & Support Services receives from Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council enables women in the Borough to receive a dedicated, specialist domestic violence support service in the community.

"Whether their experiences of violence and abuse happened a while ago or they're currently living in a problematic situation, the existence of the Outreach Service provides women with the opportunity to seek and receive ongoing information, guidance and practical and emotional support for as little or as long as they need to.

"The grant application process is thorough but not onerous and officers are always on hand to provide clarification and advice. WHWR would be unable to provide this vital service to women in the Borough without the support of WHBC."
