Welwyn Hatfield awards success
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and its partners have scooped not one but two national awards, with the Splashlands wet play facility in Welwyn Garden City and the multi-storey Common car park in Hatfield both receiving recognition.
Splashlands, situated at Stanborough Park, Welwyn Garden City, was announced as winner in the Community and Schools Development category of the 2021 National Landscape Awards.
The facility has welcomed thousands of visitors since it opened in July 2020 and has received great feedback. It features a paddling river, splashpad water play area dotted with water jets, and a nautical themed adventure playground with a large pirate ship and a variety of play equipment for children of all ages. An outdoor gym and sports pitch is also on site for teenagers and adults.
The Community and Schools Development category, sponsored by award winning design consultancy, MCM is awarded to projects that demonstrate innovative use of materials and or effective use of space. This is in addition to providing a good fit for the community.
Cllr Bernard Sarson, Executive Member, Leisure and Community Safety, said:
It's wonderful that our still relatively new splash park is receiving this accolade but not that surprising, as it really is something special! This award is for the council officers, but also of course for Ground Control, which constructed the facility. They turned the vision into reality and made Splashlands a brilliant, family-friendly day out for all ages.
Jim Bennett, Construction Manager at Ground Control said "Working at Stanborough was very challenging and satisfying at the same time. The result is a great facility, built to a very high standard that we are all proud of. Working with the client and the design team ensured that we were all able to work together to achieve this fantastic facility".
The multi-storey Common car park in Hatfield won an award for council partners Bourne Parking and Brightspace Architects at the British Parking Awards last Friday.
The car park came top in the Special Projects category, as well as being nominated in the Best Car Park category.
Managing Director of partners Bourne Parking, Karl Butters, said: "It was great to receive national recognition for the Common Hatfield new multi-storey car park at the British Parking Awards. Congratulations to the whole Bourne parking team and special thanks to Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council for making this happen. A fantastic achievement - well done all".
Leader of the Council, Cllr Tony Kingsbury, said:
Since reopening in March the Common car park has already been awarded the prestigious Park Mark by the British parking association. Now our partners Bourne Parking and Brightside Architects have rightly been lauded for a design and layout that perfectly blends the past and the future: featuring our aviation heritage with the iconic aircraft designs along its exterior, and plenty of electric charging points for our residents.
Cllr Duncan Bell, Executive Member, Resources, said, "It's a brilliantly managed project by our partners. It's also part of our overall vision for the regeneration of Hatfield town centre and the surrounding area."
