Hatfield centres show off new equipment following refurbishment

Gyms at Hatfield Leisure Centre and Hatfield Swim Centre have been treated to a sparkling make-over ready for the New Year's fitness drive.

In addition to a fresh coat of paint and zingy purple flooring, both gyms have been 're-jigged', with equipment moved around to promote a feeling of space and flow between different activities.

At Hatfield Swim Centre's gym, the strength and cardio area has been expanded with more equipment. There is also now a 'Pool Pod' in the swimming pool which helps anyone who has difficulty using a ladder or steps to access the 33m pool independently.

The Leisure Centre features a free weight area which has been designed to increase floor space, a new deadlifting section and new turf flooring in the functional training zone. The seated machines have been re-located and paired together to support consistent muscle groups.

Both centres are operated by charitable social enterprise GLL under the 'Better' brand and in partnership with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.

Vishal Karia, Partnership Manager for GLL, commented, "I'm astonished at what we've achieved in a two-week turnaround and with a budget of £30k - it's a makeover worthy of Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen himself!

"We were able to complete the refurbishments with minimal disruption to our customers," he continues, "and I'm confident that they'll be flocking back in the new year, keen to work off the turkey and mince pies!"

Celebrating the news, Councillor Terry Mitchinson, Executive Member for Leisure and Community, said: "I am delighted residents were able to enjoy the new and improved facilities over the Christmas break and those of us making New Year resolutions will be able to go to the gym more often.

"The centres have been transformed into modern venues where the community can enjoy keeping fit and trying new fitness classes. I hope to see many current and new members using the new facilities. Well done to everyone involved!"
