Dragon Boat Racing comes to Stanborough for WGC centenary
Entries are now open for sports clubs, community groups and local businesses in Welwyn Garden City to take part in a spectacular Dragon Boat Racing Festival at Stanborough Park next July as part of the town's centenary celebrations.
There are 36 boats available for racing and teams will be made up of 11 people. Each boat is guaranteed to take part in at least three races during the day.
The event on Sunday 5 July is being organised by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council in partnership with GLL/Better Leisure and the Welwyn Garden City Centenary Foundation to conclude the centenary festival's Week of Sport.
A schools Dragon Boat racing event is planned for Monday 6 July.
The council's Community Partnerships Manager Matthew Rayner said:
This is an exciting and unique way for local groups and businesses to get involved in the WGC centenary celebrations.
We hope the community will get behind the event and support everyone taking part. It's going to be a lot of fun, both for those racing and those opting to stay on dry land.
John Beech, who is co-ordinating the WGC Centenary Foundation's Sport For All programme, said:
The Dragon Boat Festival will be a colourful and spectacular culmination to our Week of Sport and a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Welwyn Garden City's sporting heritage. It should be a great day out for all the family.
