The ceremony began at 10.30am outside the Council Chamber, at the council offices, Campus East.

Councillor Trigg read the Commonwealth Affirmation and delivered a message from The Right Honourable Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The theme for 2019 is 'A Connected Commonwealth', which offers opportunities for the people, governments and institutions of this richly diverse family of nations to connect and work together at many levels through far-reaching and deep-rooted networks of friendship and goodwill.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Roger Trigg, said:

We are really proud to take part in this celebration that takes place in countries across the world, raising our flag to show our appreciation for the Commonwealth and its values.

The raising of the flag is a great opportunity for local communities to come together to celebrate the diversity and inclusiveness of the Commonwealth.
