Free air pollution alerts to your mobile
Residents in Welwyn Hatfield can now receive free air quality alerts straight to their mobiles, thanks to a new notification service.
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council has signed up to the 'Herts & Beds Air Pollution Alert System', delivered by environmental consultancy Ricardo Energy and Environment.
The Air Pollution Alert System provides a text or email when levels of air pollution in your area increase to a moderate level or above. The alerts are sent out before moderate, high, or very high levels of air pollution are forecast.
This service sits alongside a website that provides 'at-a-glance' air quality information for Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. Coloured markers on a map pinpoint exact areas and provide an immediate pollution summary ranging from 1 (low) - 10 (high).
The launch of the new service is timely, following the Government's recently published Clean Air Strategy which looks to local authorities to provide pollution alerts.
Councillor Fiona Thomson, Executive Member for Public Health at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, said:
This technology will be especially useful to those who are more vulnerable to air pollution, ensuring they are better prepared to manage its effects. The service is easy to use and will really benefit anyone that has a health condition or spends a lot of time outside.
County Councillor Tim Hutchings, HCC's Cabinet Member for Public Health and Prevention said:
Poor air quality affects everyone, but it has a disproportionate impact on the young, the old and the sick. It is not an easy challenge to solve and can only be tackled through collective action. I am delighted to support this initiative, it will provide an early warning service which will enable people to take action using, if necessary, to minimise the effects of pollution episodes on their health.
