Trees to be removed along Lyles Lane
A path closure will be in place for five weeks whilst the council fells decayed trees along Lyles Lane in Welwyn Garden City.
Nineteen poplar trees along the foot and cycle path have been identified for removal following a routine inspection, and the work will take place from Monday 6 November – Friday 8 December. The foot and cycle path will be closed during this time. This is the last stage of the poplar felling along Lyles Lane, with 18 poplars removed last year and additional trees felled in 2019.
The trees were found to be in poor health, with many having damaged or broken limbs, and showing signs of decay or infection within the main stems. There are concerns that if the trees remain, they will fall and cause damage.
Due to the location of the trees along a busy path and adjacent to a major railway route, the council has taken the decision to remove the trees and a replanting scheme will be undertaken between December 2023 to February 2024 following the removal of the stumps.
Cllr Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member, Environment, said:
We have recently inspected the trees along the foot and cycle path and found that they are severely decayed. This poses a serious safety risk and requires us to remove them as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause to the users of the path, which will be closed for five weeks while we carry out the work. We are committed to replacing the trees with new ones in the next planting seasons.
