Crucial Crew, the interactive education-based sessions that teach young people important life skills, took place at Monks Walk School in Welwyn Garden City on the 8 November.

The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor Pankit Shah, attended the event along with Councillor Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member Environment, Councillor Russ Platt, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council Chief Executive Ka Ng and officers to meet the students and teachers.

Running since 2006, five sessions have already taken place this year for over 1,000 Year 7 students at different schools across the borough including Stanborough School (WGC), Ridgeway Academy (WGC), Onslow School (Hatfield) and Chancellor’s School (Brookmans Park).

The sessions – funded by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and delivered by the Welwyn Hatfield Community Safety Partnership (CSP) – set out to teach Year 7 students crucial life skills as they become more independent and make their transition to secondary school. Topics covered include fire safety, healthy relationships, knife crime, mental health and first aid.

The CSP partnered with Herts Mind Network, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue, Hertfordshire Police, Prevention & Diversion Team, Herts Young Homeless and Critical Response First Aid to provide the informative sessions.

WHBC’s Community Safety Team have received great feedback from students and teachers. One teacher from Onslow School said: “We would love for this to happen again next year! Students seemed really engaged in all activities”.

Councillor Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member for Environment said:

I am so pleased that once again this year’s Crucial Crew sessions have been so successful. This scheme is such an important service that we deliver as a council to our young people, educating them on how to avoid finding themselves in dangerous or difficult situations. The events give the students a chance to speak with experts on a variety of different subjects and I hope that this will help set our Year 7 students from across the borough on the right track, helping them now and well into their futures.
