Welwyn Garden City Town Centre blossoms for Anglia in Bloom 2024
Welwyn Garden City showcased its floral beauty for the Anglia in Bloom judges, who toured the town centre on 15 July.
The judges visited various locations including the Anniversary Garden, Centenary Woodland Garden and Parkway. Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council has entered five categories for the 2024 Anglia in Bloom competition:
- Best Business Improvement District (BID) Town
- Best Community Project – All Aboarders, WGC Station
- Best Sustainable Planting – Anniversary Garden, WGC Town Centre
- Best Local Authority Floral Display – Howardsgate and Parkway, WGC Town Centre
- Best Public Open Space – Howardsgate and Parkway, WGC Town Centre
In addition to these entries, Oak Hill Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium in Hatfield has been entered for the Cemeteries, Crematoriums and Burial Grounds category.
The judges will evaluate the entries based on criteria such as plant choice, maintenance, environmental responsibility and community participation.
Cllr Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member, Environment, said:
“We were absolutely delighted last year to achieve gold awards for ‘Best BID Town’ and for ‘Best Historical Parks and Gardens’ for Danesbury Nature Reserve, in addition to several nominations in the Special Awards categories. Our awards were a fantastic way to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our council officers, contractors and community volunteers, all of whom are instrumental in ensuring Welwyn Hatfield looks fantastic for residents and visitors.
“This year, we have continued to make improvements to the open spaces in our borough and town centres, focusing on sustainability in our environment. By showcasing our horticultural achievements and our working partnerships with the Welwyn Garden City BID team, in particular the work within the town centre, we are once again highlighting the efforts of our fantastic volunteers and community groups. After last year’s success, I have high hopes for this year’s awards!”
Anglia in Bloom Judge John Crawley said: “Welwyn Garden City was my home town so it was great to come back and see how the town has developed and improved. My fellow judge Ian Chatters and I really enjoyed seeing the variety of trees around town centre and the wonderful planting from the All Aboarders display at the train station, to new Anniversary Garden and Centenary Woodland Garden. Thank you to Councillor Bonfante and all of the team at WHBC for looking after us during our visit to Welwyn Garden City.”
