Accolades for Oak Hill Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium on its One-Year Anniversary
On Wednesday (25 September), the Mayor, Cabinet members and councillors toured Oak Hill Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium, to mark the first year of Oak Hill Crematorium opening.
The state-of-the-art crematorium which opened in September 2023, has already received several notable recognitions throughout the summer, and during the tour, the Mayor announced the following achievements:
- Highly Commended in the Best Public or Community Building category for the Central region at the LABC Building Excellence Awards.
- Highly Commended in the Building Project of the Year for the Herts & Beds Club Constructing Excellence Awards.
- Silver Winner at the Hertfordshire Building Awards and winning the category for ‘Best extension / alteration / conversion / new build - Non Residential.
- Highly Commended in the Project of the Year at the Eastern Echo Awards.
- Winner of the Matt Batt Award – the People’s Vote at the Eastern Echo Awards.
- Shortlisted in the Public Category for the 2024 Brick Awards.
- Shortlisted in the Community and Faith Category for the Architects Journal Award.
This summer, the Lawn Cemetery and memorial gardens have also earned prestigious recognition, receiving the coveted Green Flag again this year and a Bronze award at Anglia in Bloom. The Lawn Cemetery has also been announced as Winner of Best New Entrant and Silver for the Small Cemetery Category at the 2024 Cemetery of the Year awards.
Cllr Jane Quinton, Executive Member for Leisure and Community, expressed her pride, stating: “Oak Hill Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium is a very special place for us to remember and honour our loved ones. I am thrilled that the beautiful gardens and Lawn Cemetery have achieved such high recognition this year. The crematorium is a vital facility for our local community, and it is fantastic to celebrate these prestigious accolades on its first anniversary.”

On Saturday 28 September, between 10am and 4pm, Oak Hill will be holding a Public Open Day when visitors will be able to tour the facilities and learn more about the services that are available, the gardens of remembrance and memorial options.
