This October the majestic Coronation Fountain in the centre of Welwyn Garden City has been turned pink to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Now in its twentieth year, the collaboration between Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and locally based pharmaceuticals company Roche UK remains as strong as ever in colouring the fountain in a bright display of support for the fight against breast cancer.

The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor Frank Marsh, and Richard Erwin, General Manager of Roche stood side by side with councillors and staff from both organisations as the mayor helped symbolically turn the water pink on Tuesday 1 October.

Mayor, Cllr Frank Marsh, said:

"I was honoured to be involved in this significant event of turning the fountain pink once again for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

We have been colouring the fountain for 20 years to help raise awareness about this devastating disease and to help support those impacted by it. Sadly, my own mother died from breast cancer, so this cause is close to my heart. I stand with others who have been affected by this illness."

Shaz Yousaf from the Breast Cancer Team at Roche UK said:

“For many years, we’ve been honoured to collaborate with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council in supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each October, the fountain raises awareness of the disease within the local community and serves as a reminder to regularly check for any signs and symptoms of breast cancer. It has been an absolute pleasure again this year.”

The fountain will continue to be pink until 31 October, when the colour will be removed and the fountain will return to being clear again.
