Black History Month Community Event
WHBC is celebrating the lives and contributions of black people locally and nationally for Black History Month, culminating in a special event at Hatfield Fire Station Saturday 12 October.
Everyone is invited to the community event which is taking place at from 10am to 2pm and will feature DJs, great food, a face painter and community groups, along with artwork by Harts in Mind, which will be displayed there as part of the celebration.
The family-friendly event, in partnership with Herts Fire and Rescue and Herts Police, will provide the opportunity for visitors to tour emergency service vehicles and meet local police officers and firefighters. It aims to foster unity, celebrate diversity, and honour the incredible contributions of the Black community in Welwyn Hatfield and beyond.
Councillor Jane Quinton, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Leisure & Community, said: “Black History Month is an important time for us to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and accomplishments of the Black community here in Welwyn Hatfield. This year’s event promises to be a fantastic day of learning, celebration, and coming together as a community.”
Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Chief Fire Office, Alex Woodman, said:
“I’m delighted that we’re hosting this great community event at Hatfield Fire Station as part of Black History Month. I'd like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make this event happen.
“Days like these allow us to reflect on the past and understand better the present - celebrating diversity and the many communities that make our county unique."
Welwyn Hatfield Police Chief Inspector Pete Frost said: “We are committed to building a better relationship with the Black community and are looking forward to attending this event. It’s important that we listen and learn from your experiences so please do come along and talk to us. We want to hear what you think and understand more about how we can help you.
“I would also like to remind the community about the constabulary’s Race and Inclusion Board. It gives you the chance to meet every month with senior officers to raise your views on how the constabulary can better support ethnic minorities.
