Recycling Week
This week is Recycling Week and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) held an event to raise awareness about the importance of recycling.
The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Rescue me. Recycle’ and officers from WHBC met with shoppers today (15 October) in the Howard Centre in Welwyn Garden City to talk about recycling and what can and can’t be recycled. There was a fun interactive game to test people’s recycling knowledge and a colouring activity for children.
On 19 October at 12:10pm and on 20 October at 2:30pm, Campus West is screening the movie WALL-E for Recycling Week. WALL-E is the last robot left on earth, programmed to clean up the planet, one piece of rubbish at a time. The movie is being shown as part of the ‘films for a fiver’ promotion. To book tickets, visit the Campus West website.
RECOVER is an example of a local charity that has made a huge impact on the recycling and up-cycling of unwanted furniture, whilst at the same time offering vulnerable adults pathways into volunteering and work. Founded in 2013 by Ian Block and based at Tewin Road Recycling Centre in Welwyn Garden City, the RECOVER team transform furniture donated by the public into ‘bespoke’ high quality pieces, which they sell to raise funds. Their stunning furniture will add something truly unique to anyone’s home. Every member of the RECOVER team is on a journey to recovery, whether from mental health difficulties, being a victim of crime or domestic abuse, homelessness and addiction. They all face challenges of rebuilding families, friendships and working lives. Visit the RECOVER website for more information.
Executive Member for Environment, Councillor Sandreni Bonfante said: “Recycling is one way that we can all do our bit for sustainability and for the environment. In the summer, the Council introduced new recycling bins at 18 recycling bank locations across the Borough to improve and enhance recycling collections. I would encourage everyone to rescue those recyclables from the rubbish bin. If everyone recycled at least one extra item as part of our daily recycling routine, that would make a huge difference.”
