Tewin Road Recycling Centre and Depot on schedule to fully open this May

The multi-million pound investment is being jointly funded by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) and Hertfordshire County Council and is of strategic importance to the continued improvement of services and recycling provision in Hertfordshire. 

The redevelopment of the depot part of the site was completed last year with new modern facilities including a vehicle wash, workshop, material bays, fuel station and a two-storey carpark and storage areas.  Electric charge points are also available for contractor vehicles and underground cabling has been installed to support a fully electric fleet in the future.  The depot is being used by WHBC’s streetscene contractor, Urbaser and grounds maintenance contractor, Continental Landscapes Ltd. 

The other part of the site is being redeveloped and managed by Hertfordshire County Council as a recycling centre. The new centre, which will be open 7 days a week, will be a split level site making it easier for users to dispose of items. There will be over 30 parking bays and 25 containers to ensure capacity and reduce queuing, and at busy times a lengthy ‘running lane’ ensures visitors won’t have to queue onto the road. The centre will also feature a large, purpose built Reuse Shop as well as a business waste facility. The new recycling centre will open in May 2023 and replaces the existing local site at Cole Green on the A414, which closes on 31 March 2023.   

The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor Barbara Fitzsimon joined the Leader of the Council, Councillor Tony Kingsbury, Councillor Samuel Kasumu, Executive Member for Environment and Climate Change, WHBC Chief Ka Ng and members of WHBC Senior Leadership Team for a tour of the site and a briefing from developers R G Carter on progress with the construction of the new recycling centre.   

Councillor Kasumu, said: “It was really great to see the progress that has been made with the construction of the new recycling centre and to see the new depot in action.  Our residents and local businesses are keen recyclers and want to do all they can to help the environment.  This new site will deliver on that by providing better facilities and better access, making recycling easier for everyone.  The new site even has a Reuse Shop selling quality household bargains that have been dropped off for reuse at the recycling centre.  The new depot part of the site has been operational for a while and is enabling us to operate our services more efficiently.”
