Public consultation launched on Landscape Management Plan for The Commons Local Nature Reserve
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) has announced the launch of a public consultation on the Landscape Management Plan for The Commons Local Nature Reserve in Welwyn Garden City.
This comprehensive 10-year plan, commissioned by WHBC and developed by environmental specialists Maydencroft Limited, will guide the management of the 13.2-hectare site, ensuring a balance between biodiversity, conservation and community involvement.
The Plan outlines strategies for preserving existing habitats such as fens, woodlands, grasslands and ponds, while fostering volunteer participation, educational programs and sustainable practices. A key focus of the Plan is the responsible stewardship of The Commons to support local wildlife, improve public access and promote the long-term ecological health of the reserve through targeted management and strategic enhancements.
The Plan has been written and designed to be accessible to anyone interested in or involved in managing the reserve, with the goal of encouraging a broader understanding and active participation across the Borough in shaping the site's future.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to read The Landscape Management Plan before taking part in the consultation which closes on Monday 30 December.
Cllr Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member for Environment, said: “The Commons Local Nature Reserve is one of the treasures of our Borough. The Landscape Management Plan sets out how we plan to manage this beautiful natural area over the next ten years. The consultation is an opportunity for everyone on the Borough to have their say on how we sustain the reserve for future generations.
