Updated Statement regarding District Enforcement

Before and after bus shelter

Cabinet met with District Enforcement Limited on Tuesday (28 January) for an update on the 12-month pilot scheme that is underway to tackle fly tipping, illegal dumping and littering.

This pilot aims to enforce and reduce the blight that dumped rubbish and littering has on our Borough, and to instil a sense of civic pride amongst everyone that lives, works and visits Welwyn Hatfield.

The update was one of a series of regular meetings that the Council are holding with District Enforcement throughout the pilot period to review the guidelines that District Enforcement are using, and to ensure that their processes are consistent and appropriate.

Cabinet Members were pleased to hear that District Enforcement Officers had received positive feedback from local residents who commented on the fact that some waste hotspots had been actively enforced and that fly tippers had been served with Fixed Penalty Notices.

Cabinet Members questioned District Enforcement about their processes for reviewing penalties that had been disputed.  Members were reassured by District Enforcement they were putting additional measures in place to ensure that there is a robust review of disputed penalties, and that the penalties had been issued correctly and in accordance with environmental protection legislation.
