Groundbreaking at Market Place in Hatfield

Hatfield Market Place groundbreaking

A groundbreaking event on 11 March marked the start of the Hatfield Market Place public realm improvement, a key part of the town’s regeneration.

The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield Cllr Frank Marsh broke the ground alongside the Leader of the Council, Cllr Max Holloway; Deputy Leader, Cllr Jane Quinton; Executive Member for Planning, Cllr Rose Grewal; Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council Chief Executive, Ka Ng; councillors, council officers, and representatives from contractors Henderson & Taylor and surveyors Press & Starkey.

The project will create a welcoming, accessible, sustainable public space where people of all ages can relax, socialise, and enjoy the surroundings. Enhancements will include improved landscaping, upgraded lighting, additional seating and new play equipment. By creating a more inviting environment, the project aims to increase footfall, support local businesses, and enhance the overall appeal of the town centre.

Funded partly through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, this public realm improvement project is part of the council's Hatfield Town Centre regeneration programme.

Councillor Rose Grewal, Executive Member for Planning, said:

“This investment highlights our ongoing commitment to enhancing Hatfield’s public spaces. The improved planting, seating and play equipment will create a more inviting environment, encouraging people to spend more time in the town centre. I’m looking forward to seeing our community benefit from these improvements and enjoying the revitalised space.”

Matthew Lynch, Managing Director of Henderson & Taylor said:

“We are delighted to have been appointed to undertake such a prestigious project which will have a great impact for local users and will provide a pleasant, accessible community space. We look forward to completing the scheme in collaboration with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.”

The work is expected to be completed in Autumn 2025. The shops in Market Place will remain open throughout the construction period.
