Construction begins on the redevelopment of Hatfield Market Place

Construction has officially begun on the redevelopment of Hatfield Market Place – a key part of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s ongoing plans to regenerate the town centre.
The project will create a vibrant, accessible and sustainable public space where families and people of all ages can relax, play and enjoy quality time.
Contractors, civil engineering specialist Henderson & Taylor, are now on site and have been busy removing planters and walls while carefully saving paving blocks for future use. Information boards are displayed in the window at Mather Estates to showcase the new design for the area and allow residents to view the planned improvements.
The redevelopment will create an inclusive play area for children of all abilities, enhanced landscaping with new trees and planting, as well as new seating and street furniture. Pedestrian access and safety will be improved, while lighting will be upgraded to provide better visibility and ambiance.
Councillor Rose Grewal, Executive Member for Planning, said:
“I’m delighted to see that work on the regeneration of Hatfield Market Place is now underway. This is a truly exciting project that will create a more welcoming and community-focused environment for local residents, visitors and businesses.
“Delivering this project forms a key part of our pledge to support vibrant town centres, and I am looking forward to seeing it take shape over the weeks and months ahead."
The improvement works, which are being delivered using funding secured through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, are part of the council’s broader initiative to revitalise the borough’s town centres. Construction work is expected to be completed by the autumn.

Businesses at Market Place will remain open throughout the construction period.
