Warm Homes funding available to improve the energy efficiency of local homes

Lady looking at EPC rating

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council has been awarded £1.5million of Government funding to help improve the energy efficiency of privately rented and owner-occupied homes in the borough.

The Warm Homes Local Grant scheme aims to help the country achieve its net zero carbon goal, while also helping households save money on their fuel bills and enjoy more comfortable and healthy homes. Under the Grant, eligible households can receive up to £30,000 of fully funded (free) energy-saving home improvements, such as: wall, loft or underfloor insulation, draught-proofing, heating controls, double glazing and heat pumps

The funding is being delivered in partnership with the National Energy Foundation (NEF), who will assess eligibility on behalf of the council and coordinate the installation of energy-saving improvements for successful applicats.

Homeowners and privately renting tenants can apply for this funding if they live in a property with a low energy efficiency rating (EPC ratings of D, E, F or G) and meet any of the following criteria:

  • A household income of £36,000 per year or less
  • A person in the household receives means-tested benefits
  • The property is situated in an area with elevated levels of economic need

Councillor Max Holloway, Leader of the Council and Executive Member, Economic Development and Climate Change, said:

“Action on Climate Change is a priority for the Council and I am delighted that we can offer this funding to our residents who most need it. This government grant will not only improve the energy efficiency of local homes, but it will also save residents money at a time when many people are struggling with the cost of living. The improvements that are made to homes will also help us realise our goal of being net zero on carbon emissions as a borough by 2050. I would encourage residents to check their eligibility for this scheme.”

Residents who believe they may be eligible are encouraged to apply via the Better Housing, Better Health referral form at: www.bhbh.org.uk/make-a-referral. Applicants should clearly state “Warm Homes: Local Grant” in their submission to ensure proper processing.

Alternatively, residents can contact the NEF directly by emailing bhbh@nef.org.uk or calling the free helpline on 0800 107 0044.
