The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, Nicholas Buxton, today (20 June) joined the Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor Lynn Chesterman OBE and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) Deputy Leader and -

- Executive Member for Leisure and Community, Councillor Jane Quinton along with the Leader, Cllr Max Holloway, and Cabinet Members in unveiling new art installations on display in Hatfield Town Centre. The artwork, which was produced by pupils from Southfields Primary School and by artists from local charity H’arts In Mind, was commissioned by WHBC to reflect and celebrate Hatfield’s heritage and diverse community.

The works on display from Southfields Primary School pupils include floral sculptures inspiredby Hatfield Garden Village Nature Reserve, a mixed-media sculpture inspired by the de Havilland Aircraft Company which had its main manufacturing base in Hatfield and a series of drawings to represent Hatfield House and the people who lived there throughout its history. The pieces on display from H’arts In Mind artists feature Mill Green Museum and Mill, the Comet Hotel, Hatfield Swim Centre and other local landmarks.

Southfields Primary School is a local school dedicated to supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The school provides a nurturing environment for children with a range of needs including autism, speech language and communication needs. As part of this project, students explored Hatfield’s heritage through classroom activities and collaborative art sessions, producing drawings and sculptures that reflect what the town means to them.

Councillor Quinton said:

Supporting vibrant town centres is a priority for the Council and this project is a wonderful example of how we can work together to showcase all that is special about our local area. I was extremely impressed with the artworks that are on display and I would like to thank and congratulate the pupils Southfields Primary School and the artists from H’arts In Mind on their creativity. I would encourage everyone to take time to view the installations when they are next in Hatfield Town Centre.
