Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is inviting residents and visitors to have their say on the 10-year management plan for Sherrardspark Wood, one of Hertfordshire’s most significant oak woodlands.

The short consultation will run from Monday 14 July to Monday 25 August.

The new plan, developed in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and Natural England, sets out a clear vision for the future care of the wood beyond 2025. The council’s aim is to build resilience to threats such as climate change, pests, and diseases, while protecting the rich natural and historical value of the woodland.

The consultation is now open, and residents and visitors are encouraged to read the draft plan and share their views online.

Over the next decade, efforts will focus on enhancing the age structure and genetic diversity of oak trees, encouraging natural regeneration, and using traditional practices like coppicing to promote a more diverse and robust woodland ecosystem.

The plan outlines how key habitats, including open spaces, ponds, veteran trees and dense understorey, will be protected and enhanced to support local wildlife, while also preserving the wood’s historical features and managing environmental threats. Sherrardspark Wood is not only a vital ecological site but also a much-loved community space, and the plan reflects the need to keep it safe, accessible and welcoming, while also protecting and enhancing its important role in supporting biodiversity across the borough.

Councillor Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member for Environment, said:

“Sherrardspark Wood is one of the treasures of our Borough, and we’re incredibly lucky to have such a rich and beautiful natural space on our doorstep. Increasing and promoting biodiversity if one of our priorities and Sherrardspark Wood is a shining example of just that, making the 10-year management plan all the more important.

This consultation is a great opportunity for everyone in the Borough to have their say on how we protect and sustain this special place. Please do take the time to read the plan and share your views using the links below.”
