Anglia in Bloom Judges visit Welwyn Garden City Town Centre and Danesbury Nature Reserve for 2025 competition

Welwyn Garden City showcased its floral beauty for the Anglia in Bloom judges, who toured the town centre as well as Danesbury Nature Reserve and the Fernery on 15 July.
The judges were shown various locations around the town centre including Anniversary Garden, Centenary Woodland Garden and Howardsgate before visiting Danesbury Nature Reserve.
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council has entered four categories for the 2025 Anglia in Bloom competition:
- Best Local Authority Floral Display – The Campus, Parkway and Howardsgate
- Best Industrial/Commercial Area – Howardsgate and Borders
- Best Sustainable Garden – Anniversary Garden
- Best Community Project – The Fernery
The judges will evaluate the entries based on criteria such as plant choice, maintenance, environmental responsibility and community participation.
Cllr Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member, Environment, said:
“We were absolutely delighted last year’s Anglia in Bloom competition to achieve gold and overall best BID Award, as well as three special awards for Best Sustainable Planting, Best Public Open Space and Best Local Authority Floral Display. These awards were a fantastic way to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our council officers, contractors and community volunteers, all of whom are instrumental in ensuring Welwyn Hatfield looks fantastic for residents and visitors.
“Instilling pride in our environment and heritage is a priority for the Council and we have once again continued to make improvements to the open spaces in our borough and town centres, focusing on sustainability in our environment. By showcasing our horticultural achievements and our working partnerships with the Welwyn Garden City BID team, in particular the work within the town centre, we are able highlight the efforts of our volunteers and community groups. After last year’s success, I have high hopes for this year’s awards!”
Anglia in Bloom Judge Ian Chatters said:
“This is my second visit to Welwyn Garden City to judge for the Anglia in Bloom competition and it was great to see the changes since my last visit. My fellow judge Angela Barnes and I enjoyed seeing the variety of trees around the town centre and the wonderful planting, from the displays on The Campus, to new planting at Anniversary Garden. We were also very impressed by the planting at the Danesbury Fernery. Welwyn Garden City is a great example of how all towns and cities should be. Thank you to Councillor Bonfante and all of the team at WHBC, the volunteers and the BID for looking after us.”
