Welwyn Hatfield awarded Tree City of the World!
We have been awarded Tree City of the World recognition for 2022 for the fourth consecutive year!
We are one of 168 cities to be recognised across 21 countries, and only one of 19 awardees in the UK.
Our highly qualified and experienced Tree Officers manage over 30,000 individual trees as well as various woodland areas, open spaces, allotment sites, micro-orchards and several sites of special scientific interest (SSSI).They are passionate about maintaining and improving these different landscapes within the borough as the council recognise the importance of these to residents and the benefits they bring, particularly around health and wellbeing.
This week (20-26 March 2023) is 'Trees Are The Key' awareness week so our 'Tree City of the World' recognition is timely. Trees have bring us many benefits:
- trees provide oxygen
- they are a source of food and nutrition for animals and birds
- they help conserve energy
- they absorbs harmful gases such as nitrogen oxides from the air and purify it
- they help make cities more liveable - trees add a sense of freshness and clear the air of dust and pollution to make them more liveable.
We're lucky to have so many different tree species in our borough.
