Council launches consultation on Northaw Great Wood Management Plan

Northaw Great Wood

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is inviting residents and visitors to have their say on the Management Plan for Northaw Great Wood, one of the most important oak woodlands in Hertfordshire.

Developed in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and Natural England, the ten-year plan sets out clear management objectives beyond 2025 aimed at improving the ecological value of the woodland and enhancing the experience of visitors.

The consultation is now open and will run until Thursday 23 October. Residents and visitors are encouraged to read the draft plan and share their views online.

The Management Plan aims to continue to build the wood’s resistance and resilience to potential threats such as climate change, pests and diseases, while using sustainable management practices. Priorities include increasing biodiversity, conserving habitats, encouraging natural regeneration, supporting local wildlife, and preserving the wood’s historic features.

Recognising the importance of Northaw Great Wood to both the local community and its visitors, the plan also aims to ensure it remains a safe, accessible, and welcoming environment, while supporting its role in the local economy.

Councillor Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member for Environment, said:

“Northaw Great Wood is a beautiful woodland, a valuable wildlife habitat, and a hugely important part of our borough’s rich heritage.

“This plan, which aligns with our goals to increase biodiversity and protect against climate change, aims to ensure that it maintains its historic character and continues to thrive.

“We know how important this space is to the public, so we would encourage you to share your views on this important Management Plan and help us to protect and preserve it.”
