Salisbury Village Community Day of Action Success

community action day

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) held a successful day of action on Monday (29 September) at Salisbury Village Estate.

Many local residents and students took the opportunity to share their concerns about fly-tipping and littering and get advice on waste and recycling, anti-social behaviour, noise nuisance, housing disrepair, fire safety and houses in multiple occupancy.

The multi-agency day of action also involved Borough Councillors, representatives from the office of Andrew Lewin MP and partners from Herts Police, Herts Fire and Rescue Service, Hatfield Town Council and the University of Hertfordshire.  As well as meeting with local residents and students, officers also gathered evidence of non-compliance with Community Protection Warnings that had been issued by WHBC to landowners who are responsible for the upkeep of areas across the estate.

Officers found that landowners had not removed fly-tips and had failed to provide a plan of action for the future maintenance of roads, pathways and communal areas, including keeping them clear of fly-tipping.  They also found evidence of rat activity in public spaces and identified several unlicensed houses of multiple occupancy.  The Council are now considering what further enforcement measures to take against the landowners, landlords and owner/occupied premises.

Councillor Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member Environment, said:

“I am delighted that the multi-agency day of action was such a success.  The Council takes the concerns that have been raised seriously so it was great to see such a positive response from local residents, and to see so many people taking the time to talk to officers.  I would like to thank WHBC officers and our partners for organising the day of action and I am confident that, working together with local residents, we will tackle the problems that have been identified in Salisbury Village.”
