Oak Hill Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium donates £10,000 to the Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide Charity

Oak Hill donation to SOBS charity

Oak Hill Lawn Cemetery and Crematorium, which is owned and managed by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, has donated £10,000 to the Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS) charity.

The donation to SOBS, which is dedicated to supporting adults who have been bereaved by suicide, was made possible thanks to the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) metals recycling scheme, which allows crematoriums, with family consent, to recycle metals from cremations that are then sorted, weighed, and valued. The ICCM then distributes the funds to the participating crematoriums, who can choose a local good cause to support.

SOBS provides safe, confidential spaces for adults who have been impacted by suicide, offering support groups, resources and a helpline service. The charity supports individuals grieving a suicide loss, reducing isolation and helping them find strength through shared experience.

Cllr Jane Quinton, Deputy Leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and Executive Member for Leisure and Community, said:

“I am pleased that we are able to support such a worthy cause with this donation, made possible through the ICCM metals recycling scheme. Their work provides a vital lifeline for anyone facing the devastating impact of suicide, ensuring they do not have to face their grief alone.”

Josie Jakub, the CEO of the Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide Charity, said:

“We are immensely grateful to Oak Hill for this generous donation. These funds will us to continue to support those that have been impacted by suicide. This gift will allow us to train more volunteers, launch new support groups across the country, and keep our national support line running for the next 12 months. It will also help us promote our services so that more people know they are not alone at their time of need. We are deeply thankful for this donation.”
