Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is inviting residents to have their say on the potential introduction of a smoke control area in Welwyn Hatfield.

Smoke control areas are designated zones where only authorised fuels can be burned, or where only approved appliances that produce very little smoke can be used.

The Council is considering the introduction of a smoke control area to reduce air pollution and improve public health.  Residents are encouraged to watch a video about air pollution and respond to the consultation, which is now open and will run until 14 December.

Air pollution is the largest environmental risk to public health and has been linked to a range of conditions including heart disease, cancer and asthma.  The Council regularly monitors air quality in Welwyn Hatfield and while air quality has been improving, pollution is still a health risk – particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, and people with heart or lung conditions.

One of the most dangerous forms of air pollution is particulate matter – tiny particles that can enter the lungs and bloodstream.  Burning solid fuels at home is a major source of fine particulate pollution in the UK, particularly in winter and in towns and cities, and accounts for a significant share of the health impacts.  Introducing a smoke control area in the borough would help to reduce emissions of fine particulate matter from domestic sources, leading to cleaner air and better health outcomes for the whole community.

Councillor Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member for Environment, said:

“Creating a healthier environment for all of our residents is a priority for the Council and improving the quality of our air will help us achieve this goal.  As a Council, we have been working to reduce air pollution through a range of initiatives, including encouraging cleaner construction practices.

“Although air quality in our borough has been improving, there is still more that we can do.  As we look to step up our efforts to improve our environment, I am pleased that we are considering introducing a smoke control area to reduce pollution from domestic sources.  I would encourage as many people as possible to share their views on this important issue.”
