Managing your waste over the festive period

As the festive season approaches, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) is encouraging residents and businesses to reduce Christmas waste and recycle as much as possible.

The Christmas and New Year period typically generates large amounts of excess waste, and both residents and businesses are being asked to play their part in protecting the environment by reducing and recycling wherever possible.

Anyone using waste companies should ensure they have the proper licenses and paperwork and avoid unregistered ‘man in a van’ collectors who cannot provide documentation. Businesses are also reminded to have formal agreements in place with licensed waste collection providers to ensure waste is managed responsibly.

From 1 December, WHBC will launch a new, 12 month waste enforcement pilot in partnership with Kingdom Local Authority Services. Working alongside the Council’s waste contractor, FCC, the initiative will target fly tipping and littering across the borough. Those failing to manage their waste correctly may face fines or prosecution. Further details about the pilot will be shared in the coming weeks via the WHBC website and social media channels.

Councillor Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member for Environment said:

“As we all know, the excess waste generated at Christmas can have a significant impact on the environment. It’s vital that we all do our part by recycling and disposing of waste responsibly. I encourage residents to check their revised bin collection dates and make use of the additional cardboard collections and recycle excess waste at Tewin Road Recycling Centre.”

Information on changes to bin collections over the Christmas and New Year period can be found on the Council’s website.
