Council and contractors win industry recognition for energy efficiency work
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and its contractors have won industry recognition for their work to improve the energy efficiency of homes in the borough.
Refurbishment work carried out on properties in Attimore Close, Welwyn Garden City by council contractors K Systems and BTS Special Works Ltd was named best low-rise refurbishment project in the render/traditional finish category at The Insulated Render and Cladding Association’s (INCA) 2025 awards.
The judges praised the project for “combining technical precision with genuine care for residents” and showing “that with the right approach you can achieve safety, performance and beauty, all while keeping residents at the heart of every decision”.
Together with its housing contractors Morgan Sindall, the council has also been shortlisted for the Keeping Residents Warm – Best Warm Home Initiative category in the National Housing Maintenance Forum’s 2026 awards. The awards ceremony will take place on January 19 in Stratford-Upon-Avon.
Councillor Gemma Moore, Executive Member for Housing, said:
“I’m delighted that our work to improve the energy efficiency of homes and keep our residents warm has won this prestigious industry recognition. Retrofitting works help to reduce both residents’ fuel bills and carbon emissions, contributing to our goal of becoming a net zero borough by 2050. Congratulations to our team and our contractors for their outstanding work on these projects.”
The projects form part of refurbishment works being carried out across the borough with the support of the Government’s Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund to improve the energy performance of homes from EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating D-G to a C, helping to tackle fuel poverty and reducing energy bills for residents.
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council has appointed Morgan Sindall to undertake further works on properties across the borough as part of an additional £6.4million Government grant that is being match-funded by the council which will see more than 600 homes retrofitted to deliver improvements such as loft and cavity wall insulation, internal and external wall installation, low-energy lighting, and solar panels.
This comes in addition to 234 properties that were retrofitted as part of a previous wave of funding, resulting in an average annual energy bill saving of £421 per household. The council has produced a video highlighting the energy improvements that have been made to these homes, which is available to watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjJVbPJevhE
