Environmental enforcement pilot launched to tackle fly-tipping and littering
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) has partnered with environmental enforcement contractor, Kingdom Local Authority Support (LAS), to tackle environmental crime such as fly-tipping and littering.
From today (1 December), Kingdom LAS officers will be supporting Council officers and the Council’s waste management contractor, FCC, to tackle fly-tipping and littering in Welwyn Hatfield as part of a 12-month pilot scheme. Five Kingdom LAS officers will cover the full Borough, focusing largely on prevention of fly-tipping, engaging residents and the wider public in order to change behaviours through education and, where proportionate and appropriate, issuing enforcement notices including the issuing of Fixed Penalty Notices.
Kingdom’s officers will offer a visible, uniformed presence designed to provide reassurance to the public, residents and businesses. They will serve not only as a deterrent to potential offenders but can also provide immediate support and intervention where incidents do occur.
Councillor Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member for Environment, said:
“Instilling pride in our environment and helping our residents feel safe where they live are two key priorities for the Council. Tackling the blight of fly-tipping and littering across our Borough is one way we can do this, so I am delighted that we are partnering with Kingdom Local Authority Support to address these issues which I know are important to local residents and businesses.”
John Roberts, Chief Services Officer at Kingdom LAS, said:
“My colleagues and I are also delighted to be working partnership with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council to support their efforts in tackling fly-tipping and littering. We are committed to addressing the issue of fly-tipping that we are seeing across the country, and we know that many people in Welwyn Hatfield are concerned about the rising number of fly-tipping incidents across the Borough. The actions of a small minority are deeply unfair to the people who keep the area clean and safe. Our team will be working closely with the Council's in-house staff to deliver a comprehensive service so we can effectively address the small minority who commit this crime.”
