Council consults on Management Plan for Mardley Heath
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is inviting residents and visitors to have their say on the Management Plan for Mardley Heath, an important area of local woodland.
The consultation will run from Monday 8 December until Tuesday 30 December.
Developed in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and Natural England, the plan sets out a clear vision for the management of Mardley Heath beyond 2025, aiming to ensure it remains a vibrant mix of habitats where biodiversity thrives and the public enjoys a welcoming, safe, and inclusive recreational experience.
The 10-Year Management Plan focuses on four key objectives:
- Preserving and enhancing areas of ancient woodland and wood pasture features by using traditional management techniques, such as coppicing and pollarding, and controlling invasive species.
- Supporting and guiding the evolution of secondary woodland in former gravel extraction areas, fostering diverse and resilient habitats.
- Protecting and enriching the woodland’s habitat diversity to sustain a wide range of species.
- Ensuring the woodland remains a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for public recreation, with accessible trails and amenities for all.
The consultation is now open, and residents and visitors are encouraged to read the draft plan and share their views online.
Councillor Sandreni Bonfante, Executive Member for Environment, said:
“Mardley Heath has a rich and varied history and ecology, important both as a wildlife habitat and a recreational space for our residents.
“We are proud of our environment and heritage and want to ensure this beautiful area continues to thrive. Please help us to protect and sustain this special place by reading the plan and sharing your views.”
