Statement on the passing of Councillor Roger Trigg
The Council was deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Councillor Roger Trigg on Friday (23 January).
Councillor Trigg was first elected as a Conservative borough councillor in Welwyn Hatfield in May 1999 when he represented the Panshanger Ward, before moving to represent Welwyn East from 2016. Councillor Trigg was the former Chairman of Welwyn Hatfield District Council for the municipal year 2003-2004 and was Mayor of the Council in 2019/20 and 2020/21, and Deputy Mayor in 2018/19. He also served on Cabinet for a number of years covering services including Housing, Governance, Community Safety and Corporate Property.
Councillor Trigg’s son Adam issued the following statement on behalf of the family:
“Our family is heartbroken at the loss of our beloved husband, dad and grandad. He was the centre of all of our lives, and our family will be forever shaped by his love and guidance. He dedicated his life to public service for over 25 years and was honoured to serve his community as Mayor. Above all, he was a devoted, kind and loving family man. No role was more important to him than being a husband, dad and grandad, and his greatest pride was the time spent with his family. We will always cherish the many memories, laughter and love we shared with him. We are very grateful for the kindness, messages and support we have received. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.”
Councillor Tony Kingsbury, Leader of the Welwyn Hatfield Conservative Group said:
“It was with immense sadness that I learnt of Roger’s passing at the weekend. He was a long-serving councillor at Welwyn Hatfield, a former Mayor and a Cabinet Member for many years. He worked tirelessly on behalf of those living in his ward. Above all, Roger was always polite, friendly, and a real character to everyone he met. He will be sorely missed by my group, by colleagues across the Council, and by the residents of Welwyn Hatfield. Our thoughts go out to his wife and family at this difficult time."
Councillor Max Holloway, Leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, said:
"Councillor Trigg spent years representing residents across the borough, both as a ward Councillor and as Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield. Roger was always welcoming, fair minded and ready with something to contribute, and he leaves behind a legacy of service that will not be forgotten. My deepest condolences go out to his colleagues in the Conservative Group, and to all those who knew and loved him.”
Councillor Jane Quinton, Deputy Leader of the Council, added:
"Councillor Trigg was above all a kind, gentle man who was unfailingly courteous. His many years of service are a testament to his dedication to the Borough and his ability to connect with everyone. He will be sadly missed by us all and our thoughts go out to his family and colleagues.”
Flags at the Council’s Campus East building in Welwyn Garden City are flying at half-mast today as a mark of respect to Councillor Trigg.
An online book of condolence has been set up for friends and colleagues to leave messages of sympathy and share memories of Councillor Trigg.
