Generation Welwyn Hatfield Careers Fair connects Local Students with Local Businesses

Generation Welwyn Hatfield Careers Fair

Welwyn Hatfield students have the opportunity to network with over 55 local businesses at a careers fair that's being held today (6 February) at The Fielder Centre in Hatfield.

The event, which has been organised by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council in partnership with Hertfordshire Careers Hub, Hertfordshire Futures and The Careers & Enterprise Company, highlighted different job sectors and opportunities open to young people and residents.

In the morning, around 1,100 year 11 students from schools in the borough have the opportunity to network with local businesses, finding out about roles and opportunities with organisations including Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, Barclays Bank, East of England Ambulance Service, Police, Roche pharmaceuticals and Warner Bros.

In the afternoon, the fair will be opened to residents of all ages and students from other year groups, giving them the opportunity to explore employment options and speak with employers about routes into work.

The Fair was designed to give young people meaningful face-to-face encounters with employers, broaden their understanding of the range of careers available locally, and help them better understand the different pathways into employment.  It also provided an opportunity for teachers and school staff to strengthen links with local employers and industry representatives.

This morning's opening of the Fair was atteneded by the Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor Lynn Chesterman OBE, Councillor Max Holloway, Leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, Cocunillor Jane Quinton, Deputy Leader of the Council and Ka Ng, Chief Executive of the Council.

Councillor Holloway said:

“I am delighted that we were once again able to support the Generation Welwyn Hatfield Careers Fair.  It was inspiring to see so many young people exploring their next steps and as a Council, we’re pleased to play a part in helping local students build a bright and confident future.  Careers Fairs like this are vital in connecting young people with real job opportunities and help ensure that our local workforce continues to thrive.  I’d like to thank all of the local businesses and schools that took part in the Fair.”

Steve Trotter, Careers Hub Strategic Lead at Hertfordshire Futures said:

“It has been a fantastic turn out for Generation Welwyn Hatfield with over 1100 young people and 55 employers. Lots of great penny drop moments for young people thinking about their next best steps. Great conversations and some great opportunities found including work experience. Thank you to everyone involved including all of the employers and providers that gave up their time today, and the main organisers The Hertfordshire Careers Hub, Hertfordshire Futures and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.”

This careers fair was supported by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
