Improvements are now underway at Longmead Estate in Hatfield as part of the council’s ongoing Nicer Neighbourhoods initiative.

The Nicer Neighbourhoods programme focusses on enhancing the overall environment of our social housing estates and blocks. Several locations have already benefitted from this work, and Longmead Estate was selected as the next area to receive improvements following an inspection and conversations with local residents, building on the success of earlier pilot projects.

The works are being delivered by the council’s grounds maintenance contractor, Krinkles UK, with support from partners STM Group Ltd and Woolmer Environmental. Recent improvements include deep cleaning of communal spaces, pressure washing of paths and hard surfaces, and clearing leaves and debris. Wooden posts have also been installed around the blocks to deter verge parking. In addition, broken garden furniture and fly‑tipped items have been removed from communal gardens and bin areas to help create a cleaner and more pleasant environment.

Further improvements are also planned, including the installation of three new benches for residents, along with ongoing monitoring and further engagement with the community.

Councillor Gemma Moore, Executive Member for Housing, said:

“By working collaboratively with our local residents and contractors, we’ve been able to create more welcoming communal areas for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to everyone involved and look forward to delivering similar projects across the borough.

We would also like to remind our tenants and leaseholders that we are currently consulting on how we manage are estates and carry out communal cleaning. We encourage you to take part and share your views with us”.

The consultation is open until Thursday 2 April and can be found on the council’s website.
