Welwyn Hatfield has received the prestigious Tree City of the World award for the seventh year running in recognition of its outstanding commitment to urban forestry.

The international scheme celebrates and promotes places that create green space in urban areas, and Welwyn Hatfield is one of 210 cities and towns around the world, and 26 in the UK, to be recognised in the 2025 awards.

Qualifying cities must demonstrate their commitment to urban forestry by meeting five core standards: having clear tree management responsibilities, an up-to-date tree inventory, established management policies, an allocated tree-management budget, and an annual community tree celebration event.

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s tree officers look after around 30,000 individual trees across the borough, as well as woodland areas, allotment sites, open spaces micro‑orchards, and several sites of special scientific interest. Their work helps to improve air quality, support biodiversity, and create a greener, healthier environment for everyone.

Cllr Sandreni Bonfante, Deputy Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Environment, said:

“I’m delighted that Welwyn Hatfield has once again been recognised as a Tree City of the World.

“Our trees are a hugely important part of our borough’s character and play a crucial role in improving air quality and tackling climate change, helping us towards our goal of becoming a net‑zero borough by 2050.

“I would like to congratulate our tree officers on winning this award for the seventh consecutive year and thank them for their excellent work in maintaining and protecting our trees and green spaces.”
