New affordable homes development completed at Ludwick Green

Councillors at the Ludwick Green development

The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor Lynn Chesterman OBE, visited Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s (WHBC) latest social housing development at Ludwick Green in Welwyn Garden City.

The visit took place on on Tuesday (24 March), and the Mayor was joined by Leader of the Council, Councillor Rose Grewal; Deputy Leader, Councillor Sandreni Bonfante; Executive Member for Housing, Councillor Gemma Moore; Deputy Mayor, Councillor Michal Siewniak and Members for a tour of the new development.

The Ludwick Green development provides 14 modern, one-bedroom apartments as part of the council’s Affordable Housing Programme, delivered as part of its commitment to building new social and affordable homes. These homes will be let at social rents to residents on the council’s waiting lists.

Ludwick Green originally had eight flats on site which had to be decommissioned and demolished because of structural issues. The new apartments have been designed to maximise space, natural light and functionality, using contemporary layouts and high-quality materials.

Each flat has its own balcony and parking space, with EV charging points available. The new homes are close to amenities, and works have been undertaken to enhance the surrounding green spaces. Three of the flats are designed to be suitable for wheelchair users.

The new development is energy efficient and environmentally friendly, providing well-insulated homes so that residents benefit from low energy bills. The lowest EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) achieved is B and the highest is A.

Councillor Gemma Moore, Executive Member for Housing, said:

“I’m delighted that the Ludwick Green development is now complete, providing well-designed, modern homes that meet the needs of our local residents and enhance the character of the neighbourhood.

“This important development is built to the latest sustainability standards, helping to reduce our climate impact while demonstrating our continued commitment to delivering good‑quality, affordable homes for our community.”

Final checks are being carried out on the new development before the new apartments will be available to view by members of the public.
