Candidates contested 16 seats in 16 wards in the Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council elections yesterday (Thursday 7 May).

There was also a casual vacancy on the Borough Council in Welwyn East ward following the death of Roger Trigg. 

The council was a Labour/Liberal Democrat joint administration and the make-up of the council has remained no overall control. The full make-up of the council is: Labour 16, Liberal Democrats 15, Conservatives 12, Reform 3 and Independent 2.

The overall turnout in the borough council elections was 41.2 per cent.

A referendum relating to the adoption of the Welwyn Neighbourhood Development Plan was combined with the Borough Council elections.  The question which was asked in the Referendum was “Do you want Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council to use the neighbourhood plan for Welwyn to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?”

The outcome was overwhelmingly in favour, with 3206 people voting yes, and 428 voting no.
