Showing our support for Dementia Action Week
Today (18 May) marks the start of Dementia Action Week, and we’re proud to support the Alzheimer's Society in encouraging people to learn more about the importance of an early dementia diagnosis.
To raise awareness, the Dementia Friendly Welwyn Hatfield community has decorated the Coronation Fountain at Campus West with crocheted blue forget-me-nots.
The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor Lynn Chesterman OBE, visited this afternoon to show her support.
A diagnosis can make a life-changing difference, helping people and their families access the care, treatment and support they need. Yet one in three people living with dementia in the UK still do not have a diagnosis.
The following activities are taking place in Welwyn Hatfield this Dementia Action Week:
Tuesday 19 May
Hatfield Library, 10.30am and 11.15am
Bookable Memory Walks to the Bunker Museum, followed by lunch and refreshments.
Christine’s Community Café, Digswell Hall, 11am-2pm.
Enjoy tea & cake while listening to local John Croft singing some old classics to spark those memories. Join in with the arts and crafts, the old-fashioned table games or just socialise in a calming environment.
Hatfield Leisure Centre, Travellers Lane, 10am-1pm
Senior Social Club - Dementia Friendly Multi-Sport Session
A relaxed and welcoming senior social club with a variety of dementia-friendly activities, including multi-sport games, board games and access to the power-assisted gym. Enjoy complimentary tea and coffee, with friendly staff on hand for support throughout the session.
Free for monthly members or £5.50 pay-as-you-go. No booking required.
Thursday 21 May
Oakview Lodge, WGC, 10.30am-12pm.
A community fund-raiser coffee morning for Dementia UK with refreshments, home-baked cakes and a raffle.
Jimmy Macs, Hatfield. Dementia Awareness Day.
Featuring a cake sale and stall with handmade items from knitters and crafters.
Hatfield Swim Centre,12pm-1pm
Dementia Friendly Swimming.
Supervised by a swim teacher, these sessions take place at quieter times with reduced capacity. Stay afterwards for a friendly social session in the Memory Café. Free for monthly members or £3.60 pay-as-you-go (carers may attend free of charge).
Lockers: £1 or a returnable token. No booking required.
Friday 22 May
Gosling Sports Park, 1pm
Dementia Friendly Tennis.
Relaxed, free session with free tea and coffee beforehand. Watch or have a go on court. Walking or seated tennis available. No booking required, carers and family are welcome.
Saturday 23 May
Knebworth Care Home, Woolmer Green, 10am-4pm.
Open Day: Nutrition and Hydration in Later Life.
An open day and live chef demonstration showcasing simple, highly nutritious foods, drinks, and smoothies. Gain helpful tips on nutrition and hydration in later life and pick up ideas for preparing appealing snacks to support a healthy appetite. Take the opportunity to look around the home, meet the friendly team, and learn more about the lifestyle and care on offer.
