Hatfield Market Place regeneration project wins construction excellence award
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s (WHBC) regeneration of Hatfield Market Place has won an award for excellence in construction.
The project was named winner of the Regeneration and Conservation category at the Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Constructing Excellence (CE) Club Awards, which celebrate projects that demonstrate excellence in areas such as innovation, collaboration, sustainability and community impact. The award highlights its success in transforming a key civic space into a vibrant destination while respecting its history and character.
The judges recognised the project as a strong example of how investment in public spaces can deliver real, measurable improvements - not just in appearance, but in how a place is used and experienced every day. The scheme was also Highly Commended in the Social Impact Award category, recognising the positive difference it has made to the local community through inclusion, accessibility and community use.
Completed last year and forming a key milestone in the wider regeneration of Hatfield town centre, Market Place delivered a range of benefits including an accessible play area, new landscaping with trees and sustainable planting, additional seating, and upgraded lighting to enhance safety and ambience. Characterised by a strong focus on re-use and sustainability, the project reduced waste, cut carbon emissions and enhanced the natural environment.
As a result of its success at the regional awards, it is expected to progress as a finalist in the East of England Constructing Excellence Awards.
WHBC is also celebrating the success of the Ludwick Green social housing development in Welwyn Garden City, which was Highly Commended in the Residential Project of the Year category celebrating inspirational projects that deliver outstanding outcomes. The Ludwick Green project provided 14 modern, one-bedroom apartments designed to maximise space, natural light and functionality, with a strong focus on energy efficiency so that residents benefit from low energy bills.
Councillor Rose Grewal, Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Planning, said:
“I am absolutely delighted that Hatfield Market Place and Ludwick Green have been recognised in these excellence awards.
“Market Place represents the very best of what thoughtful regeneration can achieve, creating a welcoming, attractive and accessible space that respects the character and heritage of the town centre while delivering lasting benefits for residents, businesses and the wider community. It is wonderful to see that success acknowledged.
“I am also pleased to see Ludwick Green celebrated, as it reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, social rented homes for our community.
“Congratulations to the officers and partners that were involved in delivering these projects.”
Councillor Gemma Moore, Executive Member for Housing, said:
“Ludwick Green is a fantastic example of the high-quality homes we are providing for local people. These modern apartments have been designed and built to the latest sustainability standards, so that residents enjoy comfortable homes with lower running costs.
“To have Ludwick Green highly commended is a proud moment and recognition of the care and collaboration that went into delivering homes that will reduce our climate impact and make a real difference to residents’ lives.”
