Welwyn Hatfield Games inspires hundreds of young athletes

Welwyn Hatfield Games

Children from 16 schools came together for a day of sport, teamwork and new challenges at Gosling Sports Park.

More than 600 Year 5 pupils from across the borough came together at Gosling Sports Park this week for the 15th annual Welwyn Hatfield Games.

The multi-sport event, which began in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics, gives local children the opportunity to get active, try new sports and take part in friendly competition. This year, 16 schools took part and represented 28 different countries, with each selecting a flag bearer as part of the opening ceremony.

The Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor Michal Siewniak, attended the event and gave a speech during the opening ceremony before pupils took part in a range of activities including golf, tug of war, dodgeball, archery and athletics. Hertfordshire Constabulary also delivered self-defence sessions for pupils. Activities were supported throughout the day by sports leaders from Monk’s Walk School, before the event concluded with sprint and relay finals, bringing plenty of excitement and support from the crowds.

The event is delivered through a partnership between the Welwyn Hatfield Sports Partnership, local secondary schools and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, helping to inspire young people to enjoy sport and physical activity.
