The award-winning Summer Takeover has returned to Mill Green Museum and Watermill, taking over the Miller’s Tea Room for the summer holidays.

The popular project is delivered in partnership by Hertfordshire Virtual School, Welwyn Hatfield Museum Service and Herts Catering Limited.

Open Wednesdays to Fridays and Sundays until 30 August, the Miller's Tea Room Summer Takeover offers freshly prepared food and drinks in the beautiful surroundings of Mill Green Museum and Watermill. Visitors can enjoy sandwiches, paninis, cream teas, cakes and hot drinks while exploring one of Hertfordshire's most picturesque heritage sites.

Behind the scenes, the project provides local young people with practical experience in hospitality, customer service, teamwork and workplace skills through a structured training programme. Participants work alongside experienced staff and mentors, gaining recognised training and valuable experience in a real customer-facing environment.

Over the years the project has helped many young people develop confidence, build practical skills and take positive next steps into employment, education and training. It has also become a valued part of the summer offer at Mill Green and Watermill, bringing additional activity, visitors and community engagement to the museum.

Alongside the Miller’s Team Room café, visitors can see the restored 18th-century watermill in action, explore the museum’s collections and changing exhibitions, relax in the peaceful gardens, and enjoy a varied programme of events and workshops for all ages throughout the year.

For those with budding bakers, the popular Mini Miller sessions have also returned, offering themed stay-and-play sessions for children under five Fridays and Sundays. Packed with hands-on activities inspired by milling and baking, the sessions provide a fun and interactive way for little ones to learn through play in a unique historic setting. Mini Millers is included with general admission.

Councillor Max Holloway, Executive Member for Community and Leisure at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, said:
