Council consults on proposed changes to street trading rules

The council has launched a public consultation on changes to its street trading policy, which aims to support the borough’s town centres while protecting public health and safety, ensuring traders operate fairly and legally, and preventing nuisance and anti-social behaviour. 

The consultation is now open and will run until Monday 28 September. Residents are encouraged to read the documents and share their views online.

Under the new proposals, all streets across Welwyn Hatfield would become consent streets, meaning anyone wishing to carry out street trading would need a licence from the council before they can trade. The proposed changes are designed to increase control of street trading in the borough and boost opportunities for small businesses, as well as helping to protect the public and safeguard the character of residential streets.

Applications for street trading consent would be carefully considered to assess suitability. The updated policy would continue to be supported by a proportionate enforcement regime designed to minimise any impacts and ensure the public benefits from street trading activities.

The responses to the consultation will be considered by the council’s Licensing Committee on Tuesday 13 October.
