Dementia-Friendly Wellness Sessions launch at Hatfield Leisure Centre

Dementia friendly wellness sessions launch

People living with dementia and their carers can now take part in free Dementia-Friendly Wellness Sessions at Hatfield Leisure Centre, funded by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.

The sessions officially launched yesterday (Wednesday 2 September), with the Deputy Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor Vaishali Shah, attending alongside members of the Welwyn Hatfield Dementia Friendly Community Partnership to meet participants and see first-hand how the programme will support residents living with dementia.

Taking place every Wednesday from 12pm to 1pm, the sessions offer a welcoming, safe and supportive space for people to get moving, improve their wellbeing and connect with others. Participants can use Innerva power-assisted exercise machines, which are designed to make physical activity more accessible.

The sessions are open to people living with dementia and their carers, with support available throughout. On the last Wednesday of each month, local charities, health services, community groups and other organisations will also attend to share advice, information and details of local support available.

Councillor Max Holloway, Executive Member for Community and Leisure, said:

“We are delighted to fund these free sessions, which will provide a welcoming and supportive place for people living with dementia and their carers to stay active, build confidence and connect with others.

“Taking part in activities like these plays a crucial role in supporting both physical and mental wellbeing, helping residents stay healthy for longer and feel included, supported and able to participate in community life. By bringing together physical activity, social connection and access to local advice, these sessions are an important part of our work to build a more dementia-friendly Welwyn Hatfield.”

Gemma Day, Healthwise Coordinator at GLL, said:

"We are proud to launch our new Dementia-Friendly Wellness Sessions at Hatfield Leisure Centre in partnership with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, ensuring the sessions are free to attend until the end of the year. The power-assisted equipment in our Wellness Hub promotes independence by enabling users to exercise safely and comfortably, while our trained team are on hand throughout to offer guidance and encouragement.

“We know that social isolation can be a significant challenge for many people affected by dementia, and we hope these sessions will help participants improve their wellbeing while feeling part of a supportive community.”

The sessions take place at Hatfield Leisure Centre, Travellers Lane, Hatfield, AL10 8TJ. Places can be booked at reception. Find out more at better.org.uk/hatfield-leisure-centre
