New exhibition opens at Mill Green Museum and Watermill

Opening on Friday 18 September, A Milling Milestone invites you to learn more about the Mill’s history, from its origins in the late 11th century, with its mention in the Domesday Book, to its restoration, looking at the people and craftsmanship who made it possible and how they keep it running today.

Since its inception at Mill Green site, the Mill had been in regular use for at least eight hundred years until it ceased operating in 1911. It stood idle for years until its restoration in 1986. Milling has continued at Mill Green ever since.

A complete restoration of Mill Green Watermill started in 1979 by members of the Hatfield and District Archaeological Society and Millwrights International Limited. Major improvement works were undertaken, including replacing rotten joists and floorboards, repairing brickwork, and enabling water flow from the River Lea to the Mill. The final phase of works involved the replacement of the Mill machinery as well as the construction and installation of a new water wheel.

Cllr Max Holloway, Executive Member, Community and Leisure, said,

“The Watermill at Mill Green truly is a piece of medieval history that through the hard work and ingenuity of some brilliant local experts, has been restored to its former glory. The new exhibition gives us an amazing insight into the art of milling and how it has evolved, as well as looking at how we can preserve the Mill’s heritage for future generations. The exhibition runs until Sunday 29 November.
