Candidates contested 16 seats in 16 wards in the Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council elections yesterday (Thursday 4 May).

The make-up of the council changed from Conservative run to no overall control. The full make-up of the council is: Conservatives 22, Liberal Democrats 14 and Labour 12.

The overall turnout in the borough council elections was 32.8 per cent.

The residents of Northaw and Cuffley also voted in a referendum on the question – ‘Do you want Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council to use the Neighbourhood plan for Northaw and Cuffley to help it decide on planning applications for neighbourhood area?’. The outcome was overwhelmingly in favour, with 1,248 people voting yes, and 267 voting no.
