Council formally grants planning permission for Wheat Quarter regeneration
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) has formally granted planning permission for the redevelopment of the former Shredded Wheat Factory site in Welwyn Garden City.
The approved scheme, called the ‘Wheat Quarter’ and developed by property developer IJM, will transform the long-vacant industrial site at Broadwater Road into a vibrant, mixed-use neighbourhood featuring new homes alongside commercial, leisure and community uses, whilst retaining and repurposing key historic buildings that form an important part of the town’s heritage.
WHBC has now issued a decision notice following completion of a legal agreement known as a Section 106 Agreement and the final steps required under the Development Management Committee's resolution to approve the application.
The decision represents a significant step in the long-term regeneration of this important location within Welwyn Garden City, bringing a prominent brownfield site back into use and supporting the town centre’s vitality. The plans include the restoration and repurposing of the iconic Grade II-listed former Shredded Wheat silos as the focal point of a new public square.
Councillor Rose Grewal, Leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and Executive Member for Planning, said:
"The Wheat Quarter is one of the most important regeneration opportunities in our borough, and I am delighted that planning permission has now been formally granted. This is a major milestone for Welwyn Garden City.
“The approved scheme will bring a long-vacant site back into use, provide new homes and investment, create new opportunities for residents and visitors, and secure the future of some of the town's most iconic buildings.
“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in bringing the project to this point, including residents, stakeholders, councillors, officers and the applicant’s team."
