Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council celebrates summer of fun and community

Two young girls at the Hatfield Community fair

Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is proud to announce a successful start to its summer events programme, which is bringing together residents and visitors to enjoy a variety of activities.

A highlight so far has been the Hatfield Community Fair, which took place on Thursday 27 July in Hatfield Town Centre. The fair saw more than 500 visitors attend, with 30 stalls run by local community organisations, partners and agencies, many giving advice, support and sign-posting services. Interactive sessions and activities included, for children, a climbing wall, face-painter, circus skills workshops, seed-planting and arts and crafts, with a rowing machine challenge for the older visitors. Live music was provided by the Ukulele Orchestra.

The fair was part of the BIG Summer 2023 initiative, which is enjoying a brilliant take-up with over 300 activities and over 2,000 visitors to date. BIG Summer aims to showcase the best of Welwyn Hatfield and encourage people to take part in new activities and experiences. Dance workshops, SEN (Special Educational Needs) Multisports, paddle boarding and graffiti workshops are just some of the exciting activities this year, and the fun doesn’t stop there! The events will be running until 13 August so there is still time to get involved and try something new. Head to the website for more information.

The Council is also proud to be partnering with HAPpy Camps, Hertfordshire’s Holiday Activity Programme, which offers a variety of physical and lifestyle activities for young people aged 12-16, as well as Herts Summer Parks with Herts Sports Partnership which encourages teenagers to get involved in free activities such as skate workshops, bubble football, pottery, painting and wellbeing workshops, all taking place at a range of local parks.

Councillor Paul Zukowskyj, Leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, said:

"We are delighted with the positive feedback we have received from our residents and visitors about our summer events programme so far. We wanted to create a sense of community and celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of our borough. We also wanted to support our local businesses and organisations to continue to grow and thrive by reaching lots of new customers as part of these community events. We are grateful to all our partners, sponsors, volunteers and staff who made these events possible."

He added:

"We hope that everyone who attends our events has a memorable and enjoyable time. We look forward to welcoming you back to our future events and activities.”
