Hedgehog competition

As part of National Hedgehog Awareness Week (4–10 May), we ran a Homes for Hedgehogs competition to inspire residents to help these much-loved creatures. The entries were fantastic, full of creativity, and clever ideas!

“It was fantastic to see so many brilliant entries to our Homes for Hedgehogs competition. There were some really interesting designs that show how inventive our residents are and how much they care about our environment.” – Cllr Max Holloway, Leader of the Council

A huge congratulations to our winners:

  • Annabelle Gatford
  • Reevie Fitt
  • Siddharth Kailash
  • Miles Crofton
  • Lucy Webb

Each winner received a hedgehog home to place in their garden or school, helping provide safe spaces for hedgehogs to thrive.

Hedgehogs are now classed as vulnerable to extinction in the UK, mainly due to habitat loss and human activity. Their decline is a warning sign that our natural environment is under pressure - and we’re committed to making a difference.

We’re also proud to share that Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council has been officially recognised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and added to its Hedgehog Heroes Roll of Honour! This award celebrates our ongoing work to protect hedgehogs and boost local biodiversity.
