What you can do to help
Sustainable energy and water use
- use water saving devices
- avoid unnecessary water usage
- install insulation in your home, our home energy efficiency schemes page has more information
- choose energy efficient appliances when you buy or replace them
- consider installing renewable energy devices in your home
Sustainable travel
- try to walk or cycle wherever possible
- take public transport
- try car sharing and find out more about low carbon travel
- if you have to drive, make sure you drive efficiently to reduce carbon and your costs
- consider buying or leasing or hiring an electric car, we now have many electric charging points in the borough
- avoid flying as it produces 2.4% of all global CO2 emissions
Sustainable diet
- try and reduce diary and meat consumption
- buy local produce to reduce food miles, we have a regular farmer's market in Hatfield
- reduce food waste and use your food waste caddy
- make ethical food choices (Fair trade)
Sustainable purchasing and consumption
- use reusable alternatives where possible
- correctly recycle materials at home and use recycling banks and centres
- reduce your use of plastics especially single use plastics (such as water bottles)
Resilience to climate change
- adding insulation, fitting blinds and using a water butt can all help to make your home more resilient to climate change
